A Joint Framework for Analysis of Agri-Environmental Payment Programs AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C..
This paper presents an approach for simultaneously estimating farmers' decisions to accept incentive payments in return for adopting a bundle of environmentally benign management practices. Using the results of a multinomial probit analysis of surveys of over 1,000 farmers facing ten adoption decisions in an EQIP-type program, we show how the farmers' perceptions of the desirability of various bundles changes with the offer amounts and with which practices are offered in the program.

A latitudinal productivity band in the central North Atlantic over the last 270 kyr: An alkenone perspective ArchiMer
Villanueva, J; Calvo, E; Pelejero, C; Grimalt, Jo; Boelaert, A; Labeyrie, L.
Productivity changes in the central North Atlantic Ocean have been traced by means of the total C-37 alkenone contents along two sediment cores located at 43 degreesN and 37 degreesN. Both alkenone signals revealed the occurrence of discrete productivity events every 23 kyr. Spectral analyses highlight the presence of a dominant 23-kyr periodicity in the alkenone signal, which is highly coherent to the precession index. However, a close comparison revealed small but relevant differences in the timing of several of the productivity events recorded at both locations. These asynchronies suggest that the alkenone maxima do not necessarily reflect a general increase of productivity over the North Atlantic. We propose that the events are related to a latitudinal...

A mangabeira no Estado do Amapá. Infoteca-e
PEREIRA, L. A. F..

A MIXED INTEGER, NONLINEAR PROGRAMMING MODEL OF INNOVATIVE VARIABLE RATE PLANTING DATE WITH POLYMER SEED COATINGS AgEcon
Dillon, Carl R.; Shearer, Scott A.; Mueller, Thomas.
The economic potential of innovative variable rate planting date for profitability and risk reduction is examined in a whole farm management setting. A mixed integer, quadratic programming model using a mean-variance (E-V) framework is used to represent the precision agriculture issues of varying planting date with novel polymer seed coatings.

A model for fossil energy use in Danish agriculture used to compare organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, T.; Halberg, N.; Porter, J.R..
Knowledge about fossil energy use in agricultural systems is needed, because it can improve the understanding of how to reduce the unsustainable use of limited energy resources and the following greenhouse gas emissions. This study describes and validates a model to assess fossil energy use in Danish agriculture; gives an example of how the model can be used to compare organic and conventional farming; and discusses the implications and potentials of using the model to simulate energy use in scenarios of agricultural production. The model is a development of an existing model, which was too coarse to predict measured energy use on Danish farms. The model was validated at the field operational, thecroptype, and the national level, and can supplement the...

A moderate decrease in temperature inhibits the calcium signaling mechanism(s) of the regulatory volume decrease in chick embryo cardiomyocytes BJMBR
Souza,M.M.; Boyle,R.T..
Chick cardiomyocytes, when submitted to hyposmotic swelling, exhibit a partial regulatory volume decrease (RVD). A Ca2+ influx by stretch-activated channels signals a taurine efflux and the RVD at 37°C. We evaluated the cell's performance at room temperature. Cardiomyocytes isolated and cultured from 11-day-old chick embryos were submitted to a hyposmotic solution (180 mOsm/kg H2O) at 37°C and at room temperature (26°C). Under these conditions we measured the changes in cell volume as well as the intracellular free Ca2+ (using fura-2). During hyposmotic swelling, cells at 37°C displayed a peak relative volume of 1.61 ± 0.03 and recovery to 1.22 ± 0.04 (N = 14), while cells at 26°C presented a peak swell relative volume of 1.74 ± 0.06 and did not recover...

A MULTI-ATTRIBUTE MODEL OF PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS AgEcon
Moon, Wanki; Balasubramanian, Siva K..

A MULTIPLE-METHOD APPROACH TO STUDYING CHILDCARE IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT: THE CASE OF ACCRA, GHANA AgEcon
Ruel, Marie T.; Armar-Klemesu, Margaret; Arimond, Mary.
This document summarizes findings from the Accra Urban Food and Nutrition Study (AUFNS) about the importance of care as an input to child nutrition and the relative contribution of various maternal and household resources to the provision of care. Findings from the quantitative survey (n = 556) and the in-depth observational study (n = 22) are reviewed and complemented with insights from the participatory rapid appraisals (PRAs) carried out at the onset of the study. Results of each phase of the research have been reported separately; this report aims to integrate findings from all three components. The key findings related to the five main questions addressed by this study are summarized as follows. ! Is care an important input into child nutrition in...

A Multivariate Model for the Relationship Between Agricultural Prices and Inflation Uncertainty: Evidence Using Greek Data AgEcon
Tabakis, Nikolaos M..
This paper investigates the determinants of agricultural price formation emphasising on the detection of possible impacts caused by inflation uncertainty. The empirical methodology employs the GARCH technique to model the "uncertainty" variable, as well as VAR modelling and variance decomposition analysis to investigate possible causal effects among the involved variables.

A NATIONWIDE, STATE-LEVEL, ANALYSIS OF ANIMAL CONFINEMENT POLICY BY SELECTED SPECIES AgEcon
Park, Dooho; Davies, Stephen P.; Seidl, Andrew F..
We have addressed the impact of state environmental regulation on the livestock industry by selected two species. Beef cattle, as a leading livestock of the U.S, has experienced relatively steady structural transformation, on the other hand, hog industry has changed rapidly of its size and the location. The beef industry more or less sticks with traditional factors rather than regulation. On the other hand, the hog industry, which has more chance to adopt the stringency of state regulation during the special movement, is more sensitive by the stringency of regulation, especially in the large operation.

A Neglected Interdependency in Liability Theory AgEcon
Dharmapala, Dhammika; Hoffmann, Sandra A.; Schwartz, Warren.
The standard economic model of bilateral precaution concludes that (in the absence of uncertainty, misperception, or error) all negligence-based liability rules induce socially optimal behavior by both injurers and victims. This paper generalizes the standard model to consider situations in which one party's precaution affects not only expected accident loss, but also directly affects the other party's effort or cost of taking precaution. If the injurer's care affects the victim's precaution costs (but not vice versa), most of the standard results continue to hold (except for strict liability with a defense of contributory negligence). If the victims precaution affects the injurers costs of care (but not vice versa), only strict liability with a defense of...
